Skim coating is a great way to make all the walls new again. Skim coat is a thin coat of joint compound also known as mud. You can do a skim coat to smooth out damaged walls with. These pieces that were cut out will make good templates that can be used to trace around on a new piece of drywall for the new patch.
Using a template is a lot more easier than using a tape measure. This will give a perfect fit every time. Always pay attention when cutting into drywall. Be easy when cutting. You never know what lies behind closed walls. In certain situations it may be better to make a hole big enough to fit your hand in so you can feel around inside the ceiling or wall before cutting.
When cutting out the damaged drywall, always cut enough drywall that will allow the damaged ends to be removed. The cut drywall ends that will be staying in the ceiling should be square, solid, and undamaged. Scrape the existing texture on the ceiling as smooth as possible. Scrape roughly one to two feet out from the newly cut hole in the ceiling. Scraping the old texture down helps the drywall knife from skipping across the rough texture which will leave ripples in the drywall compound.
