I followed his instructions, the computer rebooted, and returned to the Window Error Recovery Page. Same thing happened to me on my unsuccessful attempts so I was not surprised. We got the same failure as above.
The Dell tech requested that I manually shut down the computer, wait seconds, and restart the computer. The laptop successfully launched Windows Vista and the updates were successfully installed. After the successful install of the updates, the Dell tech installed the remaining drivers from the Dell Driver and Download Page. Some of the drivers got messed up after installing SP1 and had to be re-installed.

I see quite a few people having an issue with that one Security Update KB Try running the Fixit using the below link. I tried your suggestions installed windows vista, installed drivers, updated bios, and then did Windows update but still no success with the installation. Everything seems to work until I run the Windows Updater. I'm following Dell article Do you have any other suggestions. Article says to reinstall Windows Vista on the biggest partition. I have not tried either option because they conflict with the Dell instructions but I'm getting desperate.
Ideally these should be included on your Windows Vista installation disc, however your disc is not current. This way reduces any error with Windows Update. Then install the system drivers in the correct order, get the latest versions from the Dell website.
Although my instructions differs with what you have read elsewhere it works better. Reduced performance, conflicts with the drivers installed and the drivers in Service Pack 1 and Windows Update problems are typical of doing everything at the end with WIndows Updates, particularly with the Service Packs.
